VÆSNER

What does life look like in the future? Based on the series We Are All Hybrids from 2023, The three public sculptures Væsner (or Creatures eng.) speculatively investigate how life can arise across species. Each sculpture is a mixture of 20 different species found in Denmark using eDNA sampling in collaboration with Copenhagen University, that in turn were hybridised using artificial intelligence, sculpted using 3D software, and finally crafted in glass fiber with automotive paint. In the sculptures, we can explore the characteristics of animals. Perhaps there are traces of a snail, or the backbone of a fish? The works invite you to discover the species we already know, but also to to imagine what life might look like in the future.

On a speculative level the sculptures explore how new life can emerge in the future. The work is based on new directions in evolutionary biology that propose that by looking through the lens of genetics, there are no individuals, no separate species but rather, we live and evolve in relations and are all hybrids of each other. These Hybrid sculptures thus create an image of the opportunities for species meeting and creating new genetic relations.
